The big idea: There’s no fishing without following, and no following without fishing.
Jesus once told two fishermen, Peter and Andrew, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” They dropped their nets and went, immediately. (Matthew 4:19-20)
Here’s what stood out:
Nobody’s an expert. Following Jesus means starting as a beginner, every time. Not because we don’t have skills, but because He’s always leading us somewhere new.
Old methods don’t fit the new mission. Real fishing, the kind Jesus described, isn’t about pressure or convincing people. It’s about genuine love that draws people in on its own.
You’re not too far gone to be reshaped. Just like a potter reworking spoiled clay, God takes what’s broken and makes something new. (Jeremiah 18:1-4) Peter denied Jesus three times, and Jesus still gave him a purpose worth writing about.
Reconciliation is the real ministry. We’re not just here to recruit people. We’re here to help restore what’s broken, starting with our own relationships. One story from the sermon: a misunderstanding between two people went unresolved for months, until a mutual friend stepped in and brought them together for an honest conversation. One conversation changed everything.
One question to carry into your week: What’s a “net” you’re still holding onto, something familiar and comfortable, that Jesus might be asking you to put down so you can follow Him somewhere new?
